So... when did Shonen Jump fall out of the #1 slot? Last I knew it was

That's what TERUBI is for :). No, seriously, OAVs are a recent
development (the first OAVs hit the shelves a bit over 10 years ago with
'Megazone 23' and 'Iczer-1'), and the market didn't really pick up until
around 1990, give or take a bit. But then, your average 12 year old kid
isn't so much a fan as someone who watches the latest Gundam spewing and
wants the toys. Because that's what anime is as far as the marketroids
at Ban-Dai are concerned, a vehicle for selling toys. And Americans
complain about our half-hour comercials :).
