I think it is a result of Skuld's powers rather than the materials used so
only her direct creations come to life.

The fun part will be the moment when Skuld comes to understand her own power.

Note that each of the three sisters has a power with respect to the
spirits that are in all things.

Skuld seems to either bind existing spirits into the things she makes or
somehow awakens or creates the spirits of her things.
