I read some material on string theory. It's not that there's no
evidence. It's that they can't understand why string theory explains the
universe so well. The history of ST is unlike the development of any
other scientific theory in history. 
Take Relativity for example, Einstien had a picture of a curved
universe, he then researched the mathematics of curved geometries that
were developed in the 19th century then came up General Relativity.
In contrast, ST happened quite literally by accident. 2 researchers
discovered that certain mathematical formulae (developed a century or
two ago) were a perfect description for particle interactions they were
studying. In many ways, we still don't know why this is so. It's like
have the Theory of General Relativity but not knowing that it is based
on the idea that space is curved.
