From what I know, and being a lifeless mac geek I ought to, BSD is more of a
side by side thing...

The core itself is Mach. BSD, in most of the older diagrams sat on top of
it side by side with cocoa and carbon. Now though the diagrams show Darwin
at the bottom (Darwin being the mach based core) so I think they're probably
considering BSD part of the core now... That's annoying because they're
probably going to hide BSD totally by default... I suspect at best it'll be
an optional install...

Still there's an incredible amount of other cool stuff in OS X...
QuickTime Quarts and Openl GL all sit underneath the main OS...

thus QuickTime Movies, PDF Files(effectively post script), and OpenGL 3D are
ALL native files... IE they are all fast core OS files... you can have
several of these running concurrently with no slow downs. that's why you
could have a whole Skuld theme with realistic 3D water and heavily animated
effects without making an OS that would run pathetically slow.. (It'd still
be a bitch to make.. 0_0) unfortunately the graphics layer isn't open source
(not yet anyway :( still it would be cool!

with OS X you could even do things like the kick ass interface they have in
lain (which is heavily Apple influenced by Apple anyway... Copland OS
Enterprise indeed.. :)

it'll be interesting to see how much of a Skuld OS could be made with third
party utilities once OS X is out...
