Same with LD and DVD.
(I have yet to meet a big fan who collects everything with VCD,
instead
of LD or DVD... ^_^;)
Well, DVD isn't mainstream yet and for both LD and DVD prices are
still on the high side. As Bruce said, VCD is a good medium for archival
purposes. Especially if your anime are mostly on tape. I personally
would follow his suggestion of converting them to VCD format.
Furthermore, the VCD quality IS ADJUSTABLE! Most people doesn't want
to waste discs so the use high compression ratios in which they
sacrifice quality for disk space. If you were to use VCD version 2.0
protocol and using high quality compression, sure you need an extra disc
or two but showing it on a regular TV (in which the DPI is like .38mm)
it's just fine. (besides, i like to watch anime on something bigger than
a 13.3' LCD monitor) I recently watched Love Generation (Japdrama) VCD
2.0 format on a 29' SONY, (played off my laptop) and it was darn good.
(Opinions only)
If DVD-RAM becomes mainstream in the next few years, I might
consider porting over to that but until that happens (god know when) for
video archiving (and long storage life), I'd go with VCD.
