it's perfectly logical, old chap....if you can't be all they way up the
hill, you can't be up...if you can't be all the way down the hill, you can't
be down..therefore, logically, you can neither be up nor down, hence, why we
have "middle" and why the men are neither up nor down, the two extremes
being the only identifiers in the equation...
(BTW, it is an old English song....)
