There is a difference: most fan translations are written to be useful
to people who've bought the Japanese manga: so there money _is_ going
back to the original author/publisher.

The argument Dark Horse is quoted as making seems kind of weak to me,
as the market of people who buy Japanese manga is fairly different
from those who buy English translated manga thru the usual US channels.

In my case, they aren't even losing sales, cause I'm buying both. But
more generally, they are assuming that their total market is hard-core
fans with access to fan-translation and imports. I doubt this.
