However, I think there's a way around this. IIRC, there was something in a history book I read about the Japanese celebrating their birthday on January 1 each year collectively. And that celebrating on the day you were born is a (relatively) new thing. Can anyone confirm this? If so, we assume that Bell is just a serious traditionalist, therefore it isn't a lie.
